How the internet-speed calculation works
The calculator estimates the download and upload speed needed for activities happening at the same time. It cannot guarantee app performance, and its shopping target is not a real provider plan.
1. Start with your home’s busiest time
Choose the busiest realistic time in your home. We do not multiply your household size by one Mbps number. Each selected stream, call, game, camera, or broadcast uses a saved speed requirement from the catalog.
2. Add everyday internet use
Raw download and upload begin with a background allowance of 2 Mbps down and 0.5 Mbps up per actively online person. This built-in allowance covers browsing, messaging, syncing, and short bursts of normal use.

We plan to use up to 85% of the connection for normal activity or 80% when an activity is sensitive to delays. That leaves room for short bursts. These are our planning rules, not provider requirements.

4. Count upload-heavy tasks
For livestreams, we add a stability allowance when the source only gives an encoder bitrate. If the source already gives a minimum upload speed, we use it as written. Each camera uploading at the same time adds to the upload total.
File transfers use the file size and the time you want them to finish. The allowance for normal transfer overhead and speed changes is 10%. Without a deadline, a large file does not create a single required speed.
5. Recommendation vs. shopping target
The recommendation is the speed the calculation says you need, rounded up to a whole Mbps. The shopping target rounds download and upload up to the next common speed. Those two numbers are separate and may not match a plan sold in your area.
6. Check the plan and Wi-Fi separately
Compare both Typical Download and Typical Upload on the Broadband Facts label. For speed tests, use the middle result from at least 3 tests in each location. If the speed is good near the router but poor in another room, Wi-Fi coverage is likely the issue.
Ping, jitter, and packet loss are not turned into extra Mbps. A faster plan does not always fix them.

Confidence tells you how closely your answers match a specific source profile. It does not guarantee provider speeds, Wi-Fi quality, or app uptime.
