Do not buy gigabit from a device count alone

Most connected devices are idle or use very little speed. The calculator counts what is active at the same time instead of assigning a large number to every phone, speaker, thermostat, or TV.

When gigabit may make sense

Gigabit may make sense if a very large download or upload must finish quickly. It can also help when many high-resolution streams or cloud-gaming sessions run at once, though most homes stay below that point.

  • Compare the speed you need with the provider’s typical speeds, not just the plan name.
  • Remember that higher Mbps alone does not guarantee lower latency or better Wi-Fi coverage.
  • If your near-router tests pass but a room fails, improve Wi-Fi before upgrading the plan.
